POULTRY SCIENCE
See why Georgia’s #1 industry is one to which students flock.
We’re not just winging it. For more than a century, our #1 ranked program has produced many poultry industry leaders as well as served as a gateway to medical and veterinary schools. Undergraduate students study bird genetics, embryology, and physiology as well as nutrition, bird health and well-being, poultry management, food safety, and poultry products. Students planning to enter graduate or professional degree programs can expand their knowledge even further in several areas of science, including immunology, microbiology, nutrition, physiology, and more.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Undergraduate research: Students can work with world-renowned faculty researchers to explore questions in poultry anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics, management, environmental science, and more. This provides excellent mentoring and prepares students for medical school, veterinary school, dental school, and graduate school. This can be a paid position as well as completed for course credit.
Avian surgical techniques: This course is unique to UGA, and perhaps one of the only undergraduate surgery courses in the nation. In this course, students study anatomy, physiology, immunology, wound healing, microbiology, and practice administering anesthesia and antibiotics, intubation, surgical-grade sutures, post-op procedures, and more. Each week students perform different surgeries, preparing them for medical or veterinary school and other opportunities.
Internships: Earn class credit and build your resume through an internship in the growing field of poultry science. Poultry science internship opportunities are diverse, multi-faceted, and can reflect your interest areas.
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is building a new Poultry Science Building that will better equip our faculty and students, the Georgia communities we support, and the nation’s poultry industry for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Department of Poultry Science awards a minimum of 15 scholarships amounting to $60,000 a year. The poultry industry is incredibly supportive of students in this field of study, with many scholarships available through companies and allied industries as well.
CAREER FOUNDATIONS
While many of their students’ required courses are in the poultry sciences, it has been the department’s goal to ensure their students are multi-faceted, just like the poultry sector. Utilizing business courses within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences give our poultry science students an incredibly unique understanding of not only science (both applied and general), but business, marketing, accounting, education, communication, and more. Students planning to enter graduate or professional degree programs have the opportunity to expand their knowledge even further in several areas of science, including immunology, microbiology, nutrition, physiology, and other related studies. The flexibility and hands-on approach to the Poultry Science and Avian Biology undergraduate degrees contribute to their 100% job placement rate (our records), and some of the highest acceptance rates to graduate and professional schools in the university.
Student Stories
KYLIE BRUCE,
University of Georgia Class of 2021
Poultry Science
I love where I am at, what I do, and all that I have learned; and I owe it all to the faculty, staff, and my peers in the Poultry Science Department at UGA.
After transferring to UGA my junior year, I decided to take POUL 2020 just to see what all the hype was about. Two weeks into the course with Dr. Benson, and I changed my major to Poultry Science. From my academic advisor to my undergraduate professors, every single person I have grown to know in the Poultry Science department has had a hand in teaching me valuable life skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the Poultry industry.
Our professors truly believe in equipping the next generation of industry experts with the abilities needed to graduate and find a job they love. My professors and the faculty and staff in the department and at the farm gave me endless opportunities to network, apply for internships and jobs, and build a competitive resume.
I can guarantee that no matter where you are from or the extent your background knowledge on our industry, the Poultry Science Department is a place for you. There are countless students that came before me, and there will be countless in the years to come that will have the exact same experience. Go Bird Dawgs, forever!
