CAES alumni share their professional accomplishments and success stories

1960s

Sam Naff (BSA — Dairy Science '65) is an associate broker who specializes in business brokerage with Toles, Temple and Wright Inc. in Rome, Georgia.

Thomas Rodgers (BSA — Animal Science '67; MS — Agricultural Economics '69) received the 2021 Good Neighbor Award from Historic Athens Porchfest. Rodgers is a professor emeritus of the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

George Strickland (BSA — General Agriculture '68) received the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Strickland is the founder of Georgia Metals in Danielsville, Georgia.

Roger Bowman (BSA — Agricultural Economics '69) was inducted into Southeast Region Conservation Hall of Fame by the National Association of Conservation Districts in 2021. Bowman has been a district supervisor for the Catoosa County Conservation District since 2000 and serves as chair for the district. He is a board member emeritus for the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts.

Nancy Lovingood (BSA — Horticulture '75) has retired after 30 years with the Gwinnett County Department of Planning and Development. She is now working part-time with Jerry Weitz and Associates as a planning consultant for several small cities in Jackson County, Georgia.

Jon Huffmaster (BSA — Agricultural Economics '80) retired from Georgia Farm Bureau after 40 years of service.

Scott NeSmith (BSA — Agronomy '83; MS — Agronomy '86) has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. NeSmith is a professor of horticulture at CAES.

Sidney Bell (BSA — Agriculture Education, '86; MED — Agriculture Education, '97) received the 2021 Outstanding State Staff Award from the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.

Mike Lewis (BSA — Agricultural Economics '86) is the owner of American Tank Maintenance, which was named to the 2022 Bulldog 100, a list that celebrates the 100 fastest-growing organizations owned or operated by UGA alumni, by the UGA Alumni Association.

Charlie English (BSA — Agricultural Economics '87) started a new position as vice president of sales at How's Mom by SafeKeeping.

William Taylor (BSA — Agricultural Communications '87) is the founder of Lighthouse Counseling Solutions in Longmont, Colorado.

William Taylor (BSA — Agricultural Communications '87) is the founder of Lighthouse Counseling Solutions in Longmont, Colorado. Since graduating from CAES, Taylor has earned a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and a doctorate in counseling psychology from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is a professor of psychology Arapahoe Community College and the Metropolitan State University of Denver, both in Colorado.

Shelly Prescott (BSA — Horticulture '88) started a new position as assistant director of grounds landscape and horticulture in the Grounds Department with UGA’s facilities management division. He is also a master’s degree student in the Department of Learning, Leadership and Organization Development at UGA’s Mary Frances Early College of Education.

Walter Kimbrough (BSA — Biological Sciences '89) received a 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Georgia State University Alumni Association. A native of Atlanta, Kimbrough is the seventh president of Dillard University in New Orleans and a nationally recognized educator, administrator and thought leader in higher education. Named the male HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) President of the Year for 2014 by HBCU Digest, Kimbrough has earned national renown for his expertise and scholarship on African American men in college, HBCUs and historically Black, Latin and Asian fraternities and sororities. A 1986 initiate of the Zeta Pi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at the University of Georgia, he is the author of the book, “Black Greek 101: The Culture, Customs and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities.” Kimbrough’s effective and influential use of social media has been lauded in The Chronicle of Higher Education, the book “Follow the Leader: Lessons in Social Media Success from Higher Ed CEOs” and various online outlets. Selected in 2010 for the Ebony Magazine Power 100 list, Kimbrough previously served as president of Philander Smith College, vice president for student affairs at Albany State University and in various student affairs roles at Emory University, Georgia State and Old Dominion University.

Todd Hurt (BSA — Agronomy '92; MS — Agronomy '93) is the co-owner and operator of Tapped Athens Wine Tasting Market in the Bottleworks in Athens, Georgia, with his wife, Angela Hurt, who earned a master’s degree in public administration from UGA’s College of Public and International Affairs in 2021.

Sara Clarke (BSA — Horticulture '93) was awarded the 2021 Keepin’ It Clean Community Member of the Year Award from the Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful program for her work with the school garden at Barrow Elementary School, where she is a teacher in the gifted program.

Russell Hamlin (BSA — Horticulture '95; MS — Horticulture '98) is the general manager of the farming division of Grimmway Farms, the world’s largest producer of carrots and the nation’s largest producer of organic vegetables

Drew Benson (BSA — Poultry Science, '02; PHD — Poultry Science, '06) received the Novus International Teaching Award from Poultry Science Association. Benson is an assistant professor in the Department of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Tamlin Hall (BSA — Agricultural Economics ‘02) won a Southeast Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in Children/Youth/Teen - Long Form Content from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his show “Hope Givers,” which can be seen on PBS LearningMedia, Georgia Public Broadcasting, and PBS Wellbeings.

Catrina Pollard (BSA — Agriculture education, '07; MAL — Agricultural leadership, ’09) was recognized as the 2021 Ideas Unlimited winner by the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. She is the agricultural science teacher at Eastside High School in Newton County, Georgia.

Becky Brannon Beasley (BSA — Food Science, '08) is director of customer innovation with Westrock Coffee Company in Concord, North Carolina.

Dawn Buis Kemph (BSA — Animal Science '08) is a trainer and Pony Club Riding Center administrator at Pony Tail Acres in Powder Springs, Georgia.

Clark MacAllister (BSA — Horticulture, '08; MPPPM — Plant Protection and Pest Management '10) was named to the Fruit and Vegetable 40 under 40 Class of 2021. MacAllister is the UGA Cooperative Extension coordinator for Dawson County and Agriculture and Natural Resources agent in Lumpkin County.

Anna Daniel Reddish (BSA — Animal Science '08; MADS — Animal & Dairy Science '09) started a new position as University Relations Liaison at IDEXX. She also received a 2022 Young Alumni Achievement Award from the CAES.

Andrew Ross (BSA — Agriscience and Environmental Systems '10; MAL — Agricultural Leadership '12) was promoted to deputy chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, who represents the 10th congressional district of Texas.

Katie Sponberger (BSA — Agribusiness '10) received the 2021 J.W. Fanning Award from the Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia. She is executive director for the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts.

Anastasia Buh (BSA — Food Science '11) is the senior manager of research and development at Ferrara Candy Co. in Atlanta.

Gena Perry (BSA — Agribusiness '11; MAB — Agribusiness '14) is the executive director for the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health at the American Soybean Association.

Ben Lastly (MAL — Agricultural Leadership, '15) received the 2021 National Executive Secretary of the Year Award from the National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education (NASAE). He is the executive secretary for Georgia FFA at University of Georgia. Lastly also received the 2021 Outstanding Service Citation Award from the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.

Rebecca Lovett (BSA — Animal Science '15) was promoted to senior assistant director of experiential learning at the Florida State University Career Center.

Melea Runyon (BSA — Agricultural Communication '15) started a new job as as a new position as destination services manager at Louisville Tourism in Louisville, Kentucky.

Brianna Metts (BSA — Agricultural Communications '17) received a 2022 Global Core Values Award from the U.S. Soybean Export Council. She was promoted to industry relations manager with the organization in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Daniel Seeler (BSA — Food Science, '17; MS — Food Science '21) is an associate scientist in research and development with DSM in Columbia, Maryland.

Jake Tench (BSA — Agribusiness '17; Agriculture and Applied Economics '17) is director of government affairs for the Georgia Agribusiness Council, where he manages the council's legislative activities, providing member services to the organization's membership, directs education and scholarship activities, and supports all other aspects of the organization's work. Previously he served as a policy assistant to the Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture.

Madison Hopkins (BSA — Agricultural Communications '18; MAEE — Agricultural and Environmental Education '21) is the digital communications coordinator at North Georgia Technical College in Clarkesville, Georgia.

Katrina Laurel-Searcy (MS — Plant Pathology '18) was nominated to be on the cover of the "My Cook Magazine," an annual publication in Cook County, where she serves as a 4-H agent with UGA Cooperative Extension.

Hannah LeClair (BSA — Food Science '18; MS — Food Science '20) is an associate microbiologist for Tyson Foods at their AmPro Laboratories in Cumming, Georgia.

Gracie Rowe (BSA — Agricultural Communications '18; MAEE — Agricultural and Environmental Education, '21) joined Camp Southern Ground in November 2021. Previously, she served as the State 4-H events coordinator for Georgia 4-H and prior to that recruited for the University of Georgia's Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Rowe earned her master's degree in agricultural and environmental education from CAES in December.

Joseph Seta (BSA — Animal Science '18; BSA — Dairy Science '18) started a new position as associate veterinarian at Atlanta Veterinary Hospital in Villa Rica, Georgia.

Ashley Smith (BSA — Agribusiness and Animal Science '18) is the Agricultural and Natural Resources agent for UGA Cooperative Extension in Coffee County.

Mary Wright (BSA — Animal Science '18; BSA — Dairy Science '18) graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and has taken a position as associate large animal vet at Dairyside Veterinary Service in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania.

Lucas Brock (BSA — Agriculture Education, '19; MAEE Agriculture and Environmental Education, '20) received the 2021 Georgia Teachers Turn the Key award from the Georgia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association (GVATA). He is an agricultural educator at Central Middle School in Carroll County, Georgia.

Mollie Cromley (BSA — Agribusiness '19) joined the Office of the Associate Dean for Extension at CAES as operations coordinator in January.

Clint Edmunds (MS — Animal and Dairy Science '19; PhD — Animal and Dairy Science '22) accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at Clayton State University.

Carolyn Einertson (BSA — Animal Science '19) received her doctor in physical therapy degree from Mercer University Department of Physical Therapy in May.

Karnita Carmen (MAEE — Agricultural and Environmental Education, '20) started a new position as the program coordinator of student accessibility services for the TRIO Program at North Carolina Central University.

Ethan Cobb (BSA — Agribusiness '20) is an admissions counselor on the University of Georgia Tifton campus.

Reaganne Coile (BSA — Agricultural Communications '20) serves as policy advisor in the office of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (BSA — Agricultural Mechanization Technology, ’87).

Jared Daniel (BSA — Agribusiness, '20; MS — Agriculture and Applied Econ '21) is a Regional Extension Agent in agriculture, forestry and natural resources with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University.

Stephen Davidson (BSA — Animal Science '20) joined Nichols Land and Investment Co. in Athens, Georgia, as a licensed Realtor, where he will specialize in land sales of timberland, agricultural and transitional properties.

Jessica Fife (MAEE — Agricultural and Environmental Education '20; PhD — Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication '24) received the 2022 Up and Coming Award from the National Agricultural Alumni Development Association (NAADA). Fife also received the 2021 PSA Student Recruitment Award from the Poultry Science Association. She has served as the outreach coordinator for the CAES Department of Poultry Science since graduating from the college.

Laura Lee Williams (MAEE — Agriculture and Environmental Education '21) is a 4-H youth development agent with UGA Cooperative Extension in Ben Hill County.

Marin Lonnee (BSES — Environmental Resource Science '22) accepted a position as an event planner with the AgrileadHer Women in Agriculture Conference.

Lauren Pike (BSA — Agricultural Communication '22) started a new job as a 4-H agent for UGA Cooperative Extension in Henry County.

Alyssa Powell (MAEE — Agricultural and Environmental Education '22) started a new position with RaceTrac as an energy and sustainability reporting analyst in the energy and sustainability department.

Ashley Hoppers (PhD — Horticulture, '24) was named to the Fruit and Vegetable 40 under 40 Class of 2021. Hoppers is the UGA Cooperative Extension coordinator for agriculture and natural resources for Fannin and Gilmer counties. She is also a doctoral student in the CAES Department of Horticulture.
